Since Ancient times Dinajpur district is backward compared to political, economical and social and other regions in terms of education. Dinajpur is situated on the north-western edge of Varendra's land as a unified habitation from the time of the present day. We get very information about the education system of Dinajpur in the Hindu period. Although there was no obstacle in the field of education of the Brahmins of Dinajpur, the large population was outside the institutional education from ancient times because the local tribal people felt very low. During the Nawabi period, primary Bengali education was given in the rural schools and culture was given first reading in Chatuspathithi. In the Dinajpur, Chatuspathy was called Chaupari. In the early Muslim rule of Bengal, after the mosque as a public education vehicle, the existence of Moktab.

 

During the British rule, the Bengal School Inspector Report-1873 showed that 411 educational institutions, including a higher secondary, 30 secondary, 376 primary school & 03 girls school were found to be the largest among the educational circle of the Rajshahi district. After almost 100 years of conquest of East India Company in 1765, English School (Dinajpur Zila School) was established at Dinajpur in 1854 which  building given by King Tarkannath of Dinajpur. In 1856 it was turned into a government school. English was taught in 04 schools in 30 secondary schools and the remaining 26 were secondary Vernacular School. Out of which, 07 were government schools, 17 donors received and 02 donors received a night school. At that time it was known that there were 03 girls' schools. Girls' school in Dinajpur town was established in 1869 and in 1961 the Government Girls became a school. Other schools in Dinajpur district including Kerry Memorial Junior School (1891), Dinajpur Municipal School (Bengali School), Dinajpur Jubilee High School, Sarderbari Girls' School (1799), Sujapur High School (1919) & Rajarampur High School (1190). At present, there are 95 junior schools, 556 secondary schools, 35 schools and colleges, 57 independent Ebtedayi madrasa, 212 dakhil madrasa, 36 alim madrasa, 42 fazil madrasas, 07 kamil madrasas and 93 college with 27 technical institute in 13 upazilas of Dinajpur district. There are also 01 science and Technology University, 01 medical college & 01 polytechnic institute.
